This concert will open the 2018-2019 season of Pallade Musica and will be the ensemble’s first appearance at the Montréal Bach Festival. The concert will present three harpsichord concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed on the harpsichord by Mélisande McNabney and accompanied by the ensemble Pallade Musica alongside three guest musicians of note: the violinist Alexander Read, the violist Isaac Chalk, and the bassist Thibault Bertin-Maghit. Pallade Musica will spark this collaboration among young Montréal musicians, representing the vitality and diversity in our musical milieu. This ensemble of seven elite musicians without conductor offers an intimate reading of the concertos, an interpretation as chamber music where the communication between the members of the group will be apparent to the listeners, and the expressivity of each musician will be essential to the whole. To underline the aspect of chamber music in these concertos, the program incorporates two trio sonatas of Dietrich Buxtehude and an instrumental sinfonia of J.S. Bach. The sonatas of Buxtehude’s Opus 1 are among the ensemble’s favourite works and are representative of the core repertoire of Pallade Musica. These trios demand expressivity and virtuosity from each player. The harpsichord concertos of Bach were considered to be transcriptions of concertos for other instruments (some that are lost, as is the case with concerto BWV 1052, others that are known as with concertos BWV 1058 and 1054, both originally for violin), a body of works that forms one of the pinnacles of the harpsichord repertoire. These works, full of great melodic and contrapuntal richness, date from a time when Bach was associated with the Collegium Musicum of Leipzig. The concertos were probably conceived for Bach himself or for his sons, accompanied by a small ensemble and without a conductor. In our concert, the soloist part will be performed by the harpsichordist of the ensemble, Mélisande McNabney. Winner of the third prize in the international competition “Musica Antiqua” in Bruges in 2015, Mélisande McNabney is a young performer more and more in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. Praised for her “mastery of technique and remarkable expressivity,” (The WholeNote), she will release her first solo album in 2019 on the ATMA label.
