Brussels (Belgium), March 5, 2024 – Applications for the 20th violin edition were closed on Wednesday 29 November 2023. 290 violinists aged 18 to 31 years old have applied. In January, the videos of the candidates were viewed behind closed doors by an international jury, presided by Gilles Ledure and consisting of : Augustin Dumay, Lorenzo Gatto, Philippe Graffin, Victor Kissine, Tatiana Samouil and Vineta Sareika. The complete list of jury members will be published in April. 70 candidates were selected to participate in the first public round of this session. Since one of the selected violinists had to withdraw, there are currently 69 participants (Canadian participants include Daniel Kogan, Alice Lee, and Julia Mirzoev). Compulsory work in the semi-final

The candidates have received the score of this work for violin and piano upon the acceptance of their application. The Sun and Her Flowers will be premiered on Monday 13 May at 3 pm at Studio 4 in Flagey and will be performed by the 24 semi-finalists during their recital. The composer will be present during the semi-final and will be available for interviews.

Compulsory work in the final

 The twelve finalists will each perform a concerto of their choice and an unpublished work composed by Thierry Escaich. The candidates selected for the final will receive this work the day they enter in isolation at the Music Chapel. They have one week, neither more nor less, to learn to play the work, without outside help. The imposed work will be performed twelve times with the Belgian National Orchestra, under the baton of Antony Hermus, and will be world premiered on Monday 27 May at 8.15 pm, at the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts. Journalists can attend an audition of a recording of the piece at the Centre for Fine Arts on 27 May at 6:15 pm, in the presence of the composer. The 2024 Violin Competition will take place from 6 May to 12 June. The schedule of the first round will be announced after the drawing of lots on 3 May.
