Pro Musica’s Saison Prodige 2025

Montreal, December 12th, 2024 – Pro Musica is proud to announce its new 2025 program, Saison Prodige, featuring three concert series: Cartes Blanches, devoted to internationally renowned musicians; Mélodînes, which showcases younger artists and introduces them to the public; and Pro Musica sur la route, which offers a valuable program outside Montreal. “The idea of a Prodige Season, aimed at discovering prodigious performers and composers, came to me from my experience as a teacher of child prodigies, with whom I have worked for a long time, and which has shaped and profoundly affected me,” explains Irina Krasnyanskaya, Pro Musica’s Artistic Director.

Cartes Blanches, all at 3 p.m. in Salle Pierre-Mercure at Centre Pierre-Péladeau, kicks off on Sunday, March 30th with a recital by star pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko, recent winner of the Montreal International Music Competition and Leeds International Piano Competition, who is considered one of the most promising musicians of his generation. He will perform works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Chopin.

The second concert takes place on Sunday, April 13th, with acclaimed French pianist Lucas Debargue, whose performance was noted at the 2015 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, where he was awarded the Moscow Music Critics’ Prize because “his incredible talent, artistic vision and creative freedom [had]impressed audiences and critics alike” (this prize was not awarded to any other participant). In addition to works by Ravel, Fauré and Scriabin, Lucas will play a Suite in D minor of his composition.

The Armenian duo of Sergey Khachatryan on violin and Lusine Khachatryan on piano will offer the third concert in this prestige series on Sunday, May 18th. Sergey Khachatryan won First Prize at the VIIIth International Jean Sibelius Competition in Helsinki in 2000, becoming the youngest winner in the competition’s history, and First Prize at the 2005 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.

For her part, Lusine Khatchatryan has won several international competitions, including the “Città di Ostra” International Piano Competition and the “Città di Marsala” in Italy (as well as the 2nd European Piano Competition in Normandy, Ouistreham and Le Havre, France).Together, they have recorded several albums for the French label Naïve, including the Sonatas for violin and piano by Franck and Shostakovich, the complete Sonatas for piano and violin by Brahms, and their My Armenia, dedicated to works by Armenian composers. The program includes works by Beethoven, Debussy and Babadjanian.

As in previous years, Les Mélodînes will take place in Salle Claude-Léveillé at Place des Arts during lunchtime. This concert series continues to be very popular with audiences, who enjoy a program devoted to up-and-coming instrumentalists.

On Wednesday February 12th, soloist Sophia Shuya Liu will be at the piano, playing pieces by Chopin, Liszt and Tchaikovsky/Pletnev. In August 2022, she won first prize in category A at the 18th Ettlingen International Piano Competition in Germany, and in 2023, 1st Prize at the Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition in the USA.

On Wednesday, March 12th, the duo of Cyrille Angers on flute (first place at the Canadian Music Competition in 2022 and at the OMNI Music Competition in 2021 and 2023) and Bruce Gaulin on piano (first prize at the Canadian Music Competition) will perform a varied program featuring works by Samuel Barber, Lili Boulanger, George Enescu, Franz Liszt, André Mathieu, Heikki Theodor Suolahti and Camille Saint-Saëns.

On Wednesday April 23rd, once again a duo with Marion Portelance on cello and Emmanuel Laforest on piano for pieces by Beethoven, Chopin and Rachmaninov. Marion had the honor of playing on King Charles III’s cello for the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, broadcast by the BBC. As for Emmanuel, his many awards include the Conservatory Foundation Prize for the best pianist aged 25 and under, First Prize in the Conservatoire de Montréal concerto competition, and Grand Prize in the Canimex Canadian Music Competition.

On Wednesday, May 28th, an original trio, reunited for a world premiere, will take center stage: Cyrille Angers on flute, Thomas Roy-Rochette on bassoon and Bruce Gaulin on piano will perform pieces by Beethoven and Glinka for this ensemble, as well as a Divertimento on themes by Lucia de Lammermoor by G. Donizetti for bassoon and piano.

For the third year, Pro Musica will be offering an On the Road program with concerts at 3 p.m. at the Centre culturel Saint-John in Bromont, starting on Sunday, March 2nd with a recital by Sophia Shuya Liu playing Chopin, Liszt and Tchaikovsky / Pletnev again.

Sunday, April 27th with the Trio featuring Julia Mirzoeva on violin, Braden McConnell on cello and Antoine Rivard-Landry on piano, Beethoven will be featured with arrangements of the symphonies no. 6 in F major, Op.68no. 7 in A majorOp.92no. 8 in F majorOp.93 and no.2 in D major, Op.36.Anton Arensky’s Piano Trio no.1 in D minor, Op.32 will complete the program.

On Sunday, May 25th, Stéphane Tétreault on cello with Valérie Milot on harp will perform works by Alexandre Grogg, Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saëns, Philippe Hersant, Rodion Shchedrin, Franz Schubert, Marjan Mozetich, Hector Villa-Lobos and Kelly-Marie Murphy.
