Welcome to the 2023 Summer national issue of La Scena Musicale, our fifth of five national issues in our six-issue 27th season (2022-23) of publishing.

This season continues the all-colour, all-glossy format the magazine adopted in November 2017. With our separate English and French editions, we are proud to be the largest bilingual arts media in Canada.

Book magazines became popular in the magazine industry during the COVID pandemic and we plan to introduce our own for 2024, including a special on composer Giacomo Puccini for the centenary of his death. You can pre-order your copy today at a discounted price of $15 (instead of $20) in the subscription coupon on Page 55.

CURRENT ISSUE

Our last pre-COVID national June issue in 2019 listed 550 Canadian summer arts festivals. For 2022, the number of festivals came in at 452 and for 2023, we list 500, showing that Canadian festivals have rebounded and Canada is still the land of festivals.

La Scena Musicale’s 27th annual Summer Festival Guide is again glossy, all-colour and in the bigger three-column format. This is Canada’s largest directory of summer arts and music festivals—classical music, jazz, world, folk, country, pop and rock music, theatre, dance, film, visual arts and competitions.

This summer issue comes in separate English and French editions with a combined print run of 72,000 copies and is distributed nationally including in Vancouver and Edmonton/Calgary.

The issue features on the English cover clarinetist and composer Phil Nimmons who turns 100, Quatuor Despax who celebrates 20 years on the French cover, and includes profiles of Duo Oriana, Stella Musica, Apple Music Classical, Pablo Ziegler, and Seong-Jin Cho. As always, we offer reviews of interesting classical and jazz recordings, and books for the summer.

National Calendar

Just as in the past, we present a national print calendar, containing 550 concert listings from coast to coast to coast. Owing to space limitations, all listings are in summary form. We invite readers to consult our website—www.mySCENA.org—for complete details in both English and French.

Valentine’s and Mother’s Day Serenades

This year, both our Singing Valentines and Mother’s Day Serenades were offered free to seniors 65+. It was thrilling for our singers to deliver joy through our personalized serenades and to receive direct enthusiastic feedback from the subject of the serenades. We have compiled a virtual concert of highlights of these serenades which you can view through our website: www.myscena.org/serenades2023

SUBSCRIPTION AND DONATION DRIVE

With changing consumer habits in media consumption, La Scena has evolved while also maintaining its core mission to promote music and the arts. Our print magazine will continue to provide quality curated articles and interviews in both English and French, while our website will focus on news and events.

In 2023, we aim for more content in both our print and online publications. This issue demonstrates that we have many talented writers and we wish to give space for their voices. But the frequent increases in the price of magazine paper over the last two years is a cause for concern. We hope you will consider supporting our magazine through a donation and/or join our fundraising committee by contacting us at [email protected].

Another way to support the magazine is through the LSM Boutique at mySCENA.org, which includes greeting cards and tickets to our partners’ events.

La Scena is also hiring: through Emploi-Québec we can hire a full-time administrative assistant (calendar and subscriptions) and a full-time writer. Please send your resumé and cover letter to [email protected]. Because of the pandemic, we changed from street distribution to home delivery. To make sure you continue to receive the magazine at home, please become a subscriber or give a subscription to someone special. It makes an ideal gift for parents or artists.

As always, La Scena Musicale maintains a vigorous presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The website offers new resources almost daily. The arts are hoping for a rebound, and La Scena Musicale will be there to support them.

We wish you a happy and artistic summer!
